Wire Sawing Capping Beam and Sheet Piles due to Subsidence of Jetty
Moriconium Quay consists of 105 houses and apartments built around an aesthetic marina created in the 1990’s. The secluded homes are built adjacent to the marina and is located in Hamworthy, Poole.
The area had a section of 28m sheet piled retaining wall and this was due to the unstable ground moving 150mm out towards the centre of the marina. The client asked us to assist with a controlled demolition using wire and track saw methods with a need to pin-stitch some areas. The contract consisted of cutting and capping the beam into manageable pieces of 8t in weight. This was removed by Jenkins Marine using a 30t crane sat adjacent of the side wall. Unfortunately we were unable to use the wire/track saw in some areas so there was the need to pin-stitch drilling to a depth of 1.9m was carried out to separate the old walkway.
The equipment used was a 3 phase track saw cutting to a depth of 750mm along the full length of the capping beam. This was to separate it into two sections as there was a license needed to work on the seaward side of the sheet piles and this kept the consistency of the contract moving forward for the client. We then core drilled down through the capping beam at the back of the piles to thread the Hilti diamond wire around at 90 degrees to cut line to remove this section. Once this was complete, the crane lifted the concrete lump out using drop-in-anchors and certified lifting eyes. This was then placed on a barge and disposed of at Jenkins Marines Yard which is located in Poole Quay just around the corner.
